Most of the time, these joints were run by Eastern European immigrants, providing underground card gambling in back rooms. This is when poker began growing in popularity within Ghoulash Joints, also known as Ghoulies. If we’re talking about when poker came to prominence in the state, then it would be appropriate to look back to the 1960s and 70s. Likewise, New York has had quite a popular place amongst other poker-loving states, and it does in fact have quite the storied history there.
